Plot

In Fighting Fate Obiora worries about a nightmare while his wife tries to calm his fears, while they grapple with the issue at hand, they are visited by Pastor Lazarus.  He needs them to give shelter to a newly widowed woman, Ese and her daughter for a short while. The couple is surprised at the request especially as he has not given them time to think about it, before bringing them.

Ese and her daughter move in, although the atmosphere between Nadia and Ese is tense. It seems she does not welcome their presence. Obiora tries to make them comfortable and relaxed, the very opposite of what Nadia is doing. Nadia continually comments on the amount of food Angel eats. On the other hand Kobi and Angel become friends.

Pst. Lazarus and Ese meet and Ese hands him some documents with the hopes of Nadia and her husband not knowing.  Nadia continues to be nasty to Ese and her daughter making them uncomfortable while Obiora continues to be kind.

Obiora gets fired from his job as a result of a transaction he signed off on in the office. Nadia takes the whole situation badly. As the days go by Nadia treats her guests nastier, it even causes a spat between Nadia and Ese as Nadia calls Angel a glutton. Ese and Lazarus meet again and they discuss Obiora’s situation. Nadia offers to go out and look for help.

As the tension between Nadia and Ese heightens Obiora tells Lazarus to take Ese to his house as he fears that Nadia would kill Ese and her daughter. Lazarus gives reason why this is not possible. The revelation shocks Obiora.

Things get worse and Obiora begins to sell off things in his house. Obiora decides to get a job as a keke driver, but keeps the nature of his job a secret from his wife. Nadia tells Ese to leave her house while she begs for more time. Obiora comes in just in time, and he tells Nadia he has gotten a new job, at a Bureau du Change. She does however wonder at the nature  of the money Obiora comes home with.

Ese makes other plans for feeding herself and Angel Nadia throws Ese and her daughter out of her house. Obiora however brings them back to the annoyance of Nadia. As Ese tries to console Obiora over his predicament, Nadia misconstrues her intentions and attacks her. Ese eventually stands up to Nadia and also decides to move back to the church hall. Nadia finally finds out the job her husband does as she boards his keke. With the revelation he goes to work without pretence but his keke gets stolen, as he tries to get another one he is caught and beaten. Johnson also comes asking for his remaining money while Obiora opts to sell more of their belongings.

Pastor Lazarus visits again, but this time he comes bearing gifts of a cheque of fifty million Naira, a gift from Ese who has won the suit against her in-laws. Nadia regrets her actions. Ese and Angel visit as Angel has something for Kobi.

Suddenly Obiora realizes that Ese is the one he has been seeing in the nightmare dragging him out of darkness.
