Gangs of Lagos

Plot

The sacred Eyo festival is underway, but a gang uses it as a cover to assassinate a kingpin.  Isale Eko is an area that is not for the faint hearted. Three young friends Obalola, Ify and Gift have been born into this area where all around them there is crime and violence. Gangs of Lagos.

One day the young friends snatch a woman’s bag from her while in a traffic hold up. She appeals to the kingpin and Obalola is summoned and made to return the bag. He tells a skillful lie that turns the tables against the woman.

However his skill and ability is praised by the crime lord. His mode of handling the situation he finds himself peeks the interest of Nino one of the gang leaders. He convinces Oba to return the stolen items, and decides to take him under his wings.

This development does not sit well with Oba’s mother. All her attempts only drive Oba away from home. He seeks and finds refuge with Nino, who becomes his father figure. Nino though has no plans to bring Oba up as a gangster, but wants him as well as his friends to go to school and chart a different path of life.

This dream of Nino’s is not to be as he is killed. His dreams for the youngsters die with him and the children begin to work for Kazeem, Nino’s partner. He has no plans for them other than to keep them working as part of his workforce of gangsters.

His daughter Teni, however is given a better life opportunity and she is sent overseas to study.  On her return, Kazeem details Obalola to be her bodyguard and driver.  On an occasion he expresses resentment at the way life has turned out for him.

Kazeem however carries out his plan to murder another gang leader London, he tells Ify who is also an aspiring musician that he has gotten him a gig at a club before a big producer. He does tell him to make a slight detour and go and handle the owner of the barber’s shop where London’s killing took place.

Ify is very uncomfortable with the errand and calls Oba. Oba promises to go with him as Ify has never killed before. Ify is forced to go in alone, but does not kill the barber, he gets him to agree to run away and never return. Someone else kills the barber. Unfortunately Oba forgets the appointment.

Ify is gruesomely attacked and killed. His mother’s speech at his funeral ignites a bloodbath Isale Eko. He suspects London’s gang, but he is set straight by the gang leader Ekun who advices him use the intelligence Nino spoke about. He is told of a meeting between  him, Olorogun and Kazeem, in which Olorogun and Kazeem had decided to make Ify take the fall.

On the strength of the information from Alaye  and in a lot of grief and pain Oba vows to get vengeance on everyone who played a part in Pana’s death no matter how minor. They kidnap Terrible who takes them to Kazeem’s stash of weapons and also confesses Kazeem’s role in the deaths of Oba’s father,

Ify’s father and a host of other dark things. Oba used the intelligence he was reputed for to gather all the gang leaders from every part of Lagos and they executed their plan to change the face of the streets. They all agreed that Kazeem and Olorogun’s cup were full.
